Poor puriri moth

Mar 8, 2022

We found a very sad puriri moth in the recycling bin. We rescued it and let it recover safely before releasing it by the puriri tree.

Old puriri log with leaf

The caterpillars are huge and live for about four years eating immense networks of holes in the tree. Apparently they are a favourite treat for kakas bit we have only seen kakas on their flight path, they haven’t stopped here yet.

I have been finding all sorts of interesting fungi, none definitely identified yet. I need to get some black paper to examine the spore properly.

Might be Lactarious pubescens, poisonous
